This painting is based on the allegory of faith as described in Alma chapter 32 of the Book of Mormon. The word of God is compared to a seed: it must be planted and nourished to grow into a mighty tree that bears fruit. I have depicted a woman in the the act of this planting, hopeful and meditative. She sits on a rock, her left hand directing our thoughts to the heart, and a water-pitcher standing by her feet, suggesting that she will nourish the seed in the future. If she wants it grow into a tree like the one behind her, great effort will be required, but it’s a task she’s willing to do!
