This painting is part of my series called “The Way.” I was initially inspired by the words of the model in this painting, who was sharing some spiritual thoughts about calling on god in difficult circumstances. The elements in the piece were influenced by this, and also on a scripture which I had been stewing on for a while:
“When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out.
And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished.
Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.”—Luke 11:24-26
The painting combines symbols from the model’s spiritual thoughts and the scripture, and I invite the viewer to decipher its meaning by studying them. Overall, the painting is about one way that a person follows the Way—calling upon.
